Chesterfield C.C. Selection Policies 2009

With an increased number of registered players for season 2009, there is likely to be increased competition for places in the senior sides.  Of course there may still be occasions when we are short for a particular team for a particular match, but unless we suffer a lengthy injury list it is highly likely that the selection committee will often be faced with the difficult task of having more than enough suitably qualified and in-form players for a team.  Because of this it is felt necessary to have a framework to assist the selection committee and the following are suggested for consideration and adoption by the Club’s Committee.

General requirement:

All players shall pay their subscriptions and match fees promptly and play in the Club’s 2009 kit.

General principles:

1. Selection shall be on the basis of having a well-balanced side;
2. Selection shall take account of the format of the match (First XI);
3. Selection may be influenced by knowledge of the opposition, knowledge of the ground conditions and the expected weather on the match day;
4. Selection shall ensure that the interests of the First XI are paramount;
5. Players from the First XI squad who are not selected for the First XI shall have priority for the Second XI both in terms of selection and opportunity; similarly for players normally in the Second XI but being selected for the Third XI;
6. The Second XI shall include a number of developing players who shall be given appropriate opportunities to contribute within the game situation;
7. Selection shall be governed by the relevant eligibility rules.

Guidelines:

When there are more than sufficient players for a side, even after adhering to the general principles, priority for selection will be influenced by a player’s:

1. Regular attendance at training sessions (unless absence approved by the coach as with players playing for Derbyshire);
2. Regular availability to play;
3. Recent form and contributions to the team;

In addition, attempts will be made to allow younger players a sequence of matches in a settled position.

The Selection Committee:

The Selection Committee will be composed of the coach together with the three senior team captains (or designated deputies in their absence).  Where possible the chairman and/or the vice chairman of the Club as well as the Club Secretary will join the committee to overview adherence to the principles and guidelines and to advise on eligibility issues.

Before selecting teams, there will be an opportunity to review the previous weekend’s matches in terms of team results as well as opportunities offered to and performances delivered by individual players.

The Selection Committee will meet on Tuesday evening after practice.  Wherever possible everyone in the Club will be notified of the teams selected by Wednesday night and responsibility well be allocated to designated members of the committee to explain, wherever necessary, the reasons for decisions affecting individuals.
